I have always been attracted to what things do and how they are made. when I look at a piece of art I try to figure out how I would reproduce it. My first thoughts are "I like this" and "I can do this." If I can create the same lines, shapes and colors, mine should look like the original.
To me, art is a human endeavor that produces an object, drawing, painting,
sculpture, etc., that has no practical use. It just exists for itself, man-made and
useless. Although making art takes me to a different life experience which I
find calming and exciting. I'm thrilled when I finish a piece and my friends and
family respond positively.
My earliest memory is drawing in my room in my early teens. I took oil
painting in a class with a professional artist, Ben Moss, when he was teaching
at Gonzaga University in the 1960's. I taught Art and Music at Orange Grove
Jr. High School for three years in the early 1970's. I took a year of sculpture
and drawing at Long Beach State University in California before returning to
Spokane with my wife and daughter.
I remarried in the late 1980's and my wife, Karen and I have had individual
shows in Spokane.
I tend to work in spurts of several months and then stop for awhile. Art is something i feel I can do the rest of my life unlike other physically demanding activities. There are many projects I have planned to do, but have yet to start.
I will be working on them and new ones forever.
At the present time, I am working in pencil and watercolor, drawing and painting. I also like acrylic painting and sculpture. The creative process fulfills me and makes my life richer. I see myself doing it as long as I am here.
